Divx Connected
So last week, I was at CES and I met with Jerome “Gej” Rota, the DivX founder, at their booth. We had a nice chat about their new product DivX Connected. It is very exciting because it’s what I wanted to do a year ago with a couple of friends:
Build a software platform for set-top boxes to access services/internet but make it opened (and not closed like AppleTV is) for people to build their own plugin and for companies to easily integrate their services.
Well DivX did it and quite nicely. So I spent my last week-end playing with their SDK and voila, a nice little plugin to browse the UPnP servers on your network (using Platinum of course). The idea is that maybe you have your files on your NAS running TwonkyVision or maybe you have Videos on your XBox and have the XBMC with UPnP server running. Check the screenshot out:
Ok, i just finished coding. There’s still no playback, just discovery and there’s no installer yet for the plugin.
Update:
There’s an installer now. It’s here. Video playback is not working great yet because of Divx Connected requiring HTTP 1.1 and some weird trick mode…

Hey Vitaliy,
DivX Connected is a media experience developed by DivX… the first commercially available application of this is on the D-Link DSM-330, which was demonstrated at 2008 CES. More information about this product and the experience is up at http://www.divx.com/connected

Hi,
Btw does your plugin still need the server software to operate (I suppose we still need to have the computer up and running).
I’m thinking of buying the Divx Connected device but i would like to be able to stream directly from my NAS (DNS-323) and there is no information about the upnp support of the Divx Connected. Would your plugin allow this ?

Well, the divx connected device needs the server to be running somewhere for the device to work. So if you can run it on your NAS, then that could work. You’d have to install the plugin and have a upnp server running off your NAS too. However, if you are able to run Divx Connected on your NAS, you might as well just add the files/videos directly inside Divx Connected Server.
But I don’t think the DNS-323 is a Windows HTPC. If it’s Linux based, you’re out of luck because Divx Connected Server only runs on Windows so far.
